BLUES MAGAZINE (Netherlands) ... 'Higher Ground' album review
By Peter Marinus
With great pleasure I mention the birth of a new, sensational soul voice. A voice belonging to the Tennessee singer and guitarist John Sutton. He has a voice that combines the best moments of Otis Redding and Frankie Miller. What a soul has that man in his throat! With his John Sutton Band, he delivers the album 'Higher Ground', the sequel to the Tennessee Mud album from 2015. The oiled rhythm section consists of drummer Christian Northover and bassist Matthew Heath Harper. On some songs they are accompanied by saxophonist Eric "Dirty" Allen.
The album opens with the smooth swinging shuffle My Whole World. The guitar sound of Sutton seems a mix of the Vaughan brothers, Stevie Ray and Jimmie. His sound is mainly about the feeling and not the appearance of all kinds of guitar art. In the slow blue Love On You, Sutton shows all his soul and voice. Also striking in this song are the warm organ sounds of Michael Sharp. Higher Ground is not a cover of the Stevie Wonder number, but a light, funky, groovy blues rocker in which again Frankie Miller's voice stands out. Don't Think About You Anymore is an exuberant, simple rocker in the same vibe as, for example, Creedence Clearwater Revival or George Thorogood. This song will surely be a favorite during live performances. One Sided Blues is an old-style soul number which clearly comes from the Otis Redding school. It is pure pleasure to enjoy that delicious, soulful voice! Saxophonist Eric "Dirty" Allen we hear for the first time in the soul blues Fly Me Away. Sutton's guitar game is a bit more highlighted in the uptempo boogie Roll With The Punches. Here is found a breathtaking funky sound to admire. Also saxophonist Eric 'Dirty' Allen blends in well here. The album is finalized by John Sutton's acoustic solo song The One Who Loves You in which he forces his vocals to their limits. The album moves with a mix of blues, soul, funk and rock. The numbers do not have the same quality, but that is an issue overshadowed by that great voice.
Pay attention to John Sutton. He's going to blow up!
